Wedding Season on the Amalfi Coast

Which is the best month to get married in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast?

Choosing your wedding date is one of the most important, initial planning decisions that you'll have to make as a couple. It’s also a question that we are often asked as wedding planners in Italy, which month would we recommend works best for a destination wedding in Italy? Here we talk through the various options available to you to ensure you choose the perfect time of year in which to say ‘I do’ in this beautiful location.

The season for tourism in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast traditionally starts from Easter through to early/mid-October. You are usually able to swim in the sea from the beginning of May right through to mid-October. During this period, hotels, shops, bars and restaurants are bustling with life and the ferries that run from Sorrento to and from the islands and around the Amalfi Coast, run all day, making Sorrento a great base to explore other areas too. Things start to get quieter across the Amalfi Coast from the end of October (with most businesses closing and reopening the following season) but Sorrento stays vibrant right up until after the Christmas period. Christmas time in Sorrento has actually become very popular for tourists with bars, cafes, restaurants and shops remaining open and seasonal Christmas markets popping up too. One of the main features is the huge Christmas tree, erected in Piazza Tasso, which blasts out a Christmas song on the hour post 18:00; an experience not to be missed for those of you who love getting in the Christmas spirit.

So which is the best period in which to marry in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast?

Spring (April to mid June)

April and May are the months in which the weather starts to feel warmer again and the tourist season officially starts. The temperatures are pleasant; warm without being uncomfortable, which makes shopping and walking around seeing the sights, enjoyable. It’s an ideal time for getting married in Italy as the temperatures aren’t so unbearable that you and your wedding party are uncomfortable in your wedding attire. There is a slight risk of rain in April and early May so make sure your wedding planner talks you through a plan B option, just in case!

Summer (mid-June to mid-September)

Summer days in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are full of blue skies and sunshine, but soaring temperatures can make walking around, shopping and sightseeing uncomfortable. During these months, opt to spend the hottest hours of the afternoon relaxing on the beach or poolside and tour in the cooler morning or evening hours. Be sure to ramp up your sun protection and we would certainly not recommend choosing a midday ceremony during July/August as it will be uncomfortable for you and for your guests, especially if there is limited shade available (as often there is in some of the ceremony locations). For those of you wanting to ‘guarantee’ the weather then this naturally is the most requested season in which to get married in Italy, however our recommendation would be to choose a late afternoon ceremony and enjoy the morning ‘prep’ time with the air conditioning fully on! Shops, bars, and restaurants stay open until late into the evening during the summer months and there is a real buzz of activity across the coast.

Little tip - Watch out for August 15th onwards as this is the start of the Italian national holiday called ‘Ferragosto’ and you’ll find an influx of Italian tourists descending on the area too. You may also experience a rise in hotel prices during this period.

Autumn (mid-September through to Christmas)

During this period, the weather usually stays mild with temperatures staying consistent right into December. October has become a very popular month in which to get married in Italy, especially for those couples who want warm, but not hot, sunny days. As children are back at school, it’s an ideal time for adult only groups to enjoy a wedding celebration away from the crowds prevalent in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast during the summer. It is important to note that there can be periods of rain during this time as the temperatures start to come down from the summer highs and also important to note that the days are much shorter. By mid-November the town of Sorrento and those along the Amalfi Coast start preparing for the Christmas period and you’ll certainly find fewer international tourists. December, is all about the Christmas spirit, with an increasing number of events in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast planned each year to keep visitors busy during the Christmas and New Year celebrations! A Christmas wedding is certainly a wonderful possibility in Sorrento for those of you who aren’t concerned with having a sunny, summer wedding but something a little different that completely embraces the Italian Christmas spirit.

Winter (early January to mid-March)

Most towns tend to shut down during this people and locals who work in the tourist industry tend to take their own holidays after Christmas. Many businesses and hotels close, with limited shops, restaurants and coffee bars open. Days can be cold and wet and we wouldn’t recommend this being a period in which to consider getting married in Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast.
