Getting married at Villa Cimbrone, Ravello. Everything you need to know.

An insider's guide to one of the Amalfi Coast's most spectacular wedding venues.

There are some places that are beautiful, and then there are places that are genuinely unforgettable. Villa Cimbrone, in the enchanting hilltop town of Ravello, is undoubtedly one of the latter.

With its extraordinary gardens, historic architecture, romantic pathways and breathtaking views across the Mediterranean, Villa Cimbrone offers a setting that feels almost cinematic. It is a place where historic Italian elegance meets the natural beauty of the Amalfi Coast, creating an exceptional backdrop for a destination wedding.

Having worked at Villa Cimbrone on several occasions, it's a venue I know and particularly love. But beyond the photographs of its famous Terrace of Infinity, there is quite a lot to consider when planning a wedding here.

If you're dreaming of getting married at Villa Cimbrone, this guide covers everything you should know, from ceremony locations and reception arrangements to accommodation, guest logistics and the importance of having an experienced local wedding planner.

1. Where is Villa Cimbrone?

Villa Cimbrone is situated in Ravello, one of the most beautiful and exclusive villages on the Amalfi Coast.

Perched high above the coastline, Ravello is known for its elegant villas, beautiful gardens, historic buildings and spectacular panoramic views. Unlike the lively atmosphere of Positano or Amalfi, Ravello has a more peaceful and refined character, making it particularly appealing for couples looking for an elegant Italian wedding.

The villa itself has a fascinating history, with origins dating back to the 11th century. Its gardens were transformed in the early 20th century by British aristocrat Ernest William Beckett, Lord Grimthorpe, into the extraordinary landscape that visitors experience today.

Today, Villa Cimbrone operates as a luxury five-star hotel, with its gardens and historic spaces providing an exceptional setting for weddings and private events.

2. The famous Terrace of Infinity

No guide to Villa Cimbrone would be complete without mentioning the extraordinary Terrace of Infinity, or Terrazza dell'Infinito.

Perhaps the most iconic viewpoint on the Amalfi Coast, the terrace is lined with beautiful marble busts and overlooks the dramatic coastline and the deep blue Mediterranean below.

It is an extraordinary setting for wedding photographs, and for many couples, it is the image that first inspires them to consider Villa Cimbrone.

Depending on the arrangements agreed with the venue, the terrace can form part of the wedding experience, whether for a ceremony, aperitivo or photographs.

One thing I always recommend is thinking carefully about how you want to use this space. It is such a distinctive feature of the villa that it deserves to be incorporated thoughtfully into the overall wedding design and timeline.

3. Wedding ceremony locations

One of the wonderful things about Villa Cimbrone is the variety of beautiful settings throughout the estate.

The gardens offer several possibilities for creating a romantic ceremony, with the choice of location depending on your guest numbers, preferred atmosphere and the arrangements available for your wedding date.

Whether you envisage a more intimate ceremony surrounded by greenery or something more dramatic with the coastline as your backdrop, the venue offers a wonderfully atmospheric setting.

An important consideration: the type of ceremony.

Villa Cimbrone hosts symbolic ceremonies and certain religious ceremonies, but does not offer Catholic or civil ceremonies on the property.

For couples wishing to have a legally recognised civil wedding, arrangements would need to be made separately through the local municipality at an authorised location. A symbolic ceremony can then form part of the celebrations at Villa Cimbrone.

This is something worth discussing with your wedding planner early in the process, particularly if you have specific requirements regarding the legal or religious aspect of your marriage.

4. Wedding receptions and dining

The Crypt at Villa Cimbrone lends itself beautifully to an elegant and intimate wedding reception. Its historic stone arches, decorative columns and distinctive architecture create a wonderfully atmospheric setting, requiring very little embellishment. I love the idea of long dining tables, soft candlelight and understated floral arrangements that complement the character of the space.

For couples who prefer an outdoor celebration, the gardens offer an equally beautiful alternative. Surrounded by mature trees and the villa's historic architecture, an elegant dinner beneath the Italian evening sky can feel wonderfully romantic. With considered lighting, beautiful table styling and seasonal florals, the gardens provide a natural backdrop for an unforgettable evening.

Food is, of course, an important part of any Italian wedding. The venue's culinary team can work with couples to create a menu reflecting their preferences, incorporating Italian ingredients, regional specialities and carefully selected wines.

Both settings offer something quite different: the architectural intimacy of the Crypt or the open-air romance of the gardens. The choice comes down to the atmosphere couples wish to create for their celebration.

5. What happens if it rains?

This is something every couple planning an outdoor wedding on the Amalfi Coast should consider.

Although the weather between late spring and early autumn is generally favourable, it is never possible to guarantee sunshine, even during the summer months.

Villa Cimbrone has beautiful indoor spaces, which can provide alternatives depending on the arrangements made with the venue.

However, I would always recommend discussing the wet-weather plan before signing your contract.

It is important to establish exactly which indoor spaces would be available, whether they are included in your proposal and how the wedding layout would work should the weather change.

A good contingency plan should feel like a considered alternative, not a last-minute compromise.

6. Accommodation at Villa Cimbrone

Villa Cimbrone is also a luxury hotel, offering couples the opportunity to accommodate themselves and a selection of their guests within the property. With its beautiful suites, historic interiors and intimate collection of rooms, staying at the villa is a particularly special experience.

However, it is important to understand that Villa Cimbrone operates at the very top end of the luxury wedding market. Weekend exclusive use is generally arranged as a two-day buyout, with significant venue and event spend requirements.

Given the limited number of rooms, not all wedding guests will be able to stay at the villa. Ravello has a wonderful selection of alternative hotels and accommodation, allowing guests to stay nearby while still enjoying the celebrations.

For couples considering Villa Cimbrone, I would recommend looking at the accommodation, exclusive-use arrangements and overall wedding investment together from the very beginning. It is an extraordinary setting, but one that requires a substantial budget and careful planning.

7. Getting your guests to Villa Cimbrone

This is one of the most important practical considerations.

Ravello is a beautiful hilltop village, but its location and layout mean that guest transportation needs careful planning.

Villa Cimbrone is not a venue where guests can simply be dropped directly outside the entrance by their individual taxis. The final approach involves walking through Ravello, so this needs to be factored into your arrangements.

For a destination wedding with guests of different ages and mobility levels, I would always recommend communicating the access arrangements to us in advance.

Private transfers can be organised to bring guests to the appropriate drop-off points in Ravello, with a clear arrival plan to avoid unnecessary confusion.

It is also worth thinking about footwear. Ravello's historic streets and pathways are beautiful, but comfortable shoes are worth considering, particularly for older guests.

8. The best time of year to get married at Villa Cimbrone

The Amalfi Coast wedding season generally runs from spring through to autumn, and Villa Cimbrone is particularly beautiful throughout these months.

May and June

A lovely time for a wedding, with beautiful gardens, fresh greenery and generally pleasant temperatures. June is particularly popular with international couples.

July and August

The height of the summer season. The days are long and the atmosphere is vibrant, although temperatures can be high and Ravello becomes considerably busier with visitors.

September

One of my favourite months for weddings on the Amalfi Coast. The summer atmosphere is still very much present, with beautiful light and the possibility of slightly more comfortable temperatures as the month progresses.

October

An elegant option for couples looking for a slightly quieter time of year. The weather can be more unpredictable, so a good indoor contingency plan is particularly important.

Ultimately, the best date will depend on your priorities, guest availability and the type of celebration you have in mind.

9. How much does a Villa Cimbrone wedding cost?

This is naturally one of the first questions couples ask, and the honest answer is that Villa Cimbrone sits firmly within the upper end of the luxury wedding market.

Unlike some venues, exclusive use at Villa Cimbrone is generally arranged around a weekend buyout, with a two-day commitment and significant minimum event spend requirements. This is an important consideration when assessing whether the venue is the right fit for your wedding.

The overall investment will depend on several factors, including:

- Your chosen wedding date and guest numbers.

- Exclusive-use and venue hire arrangements.

- Accommodation and minimum-stay requirements.

- Food and beverage selections.

- Flowers, styling and production.

- Entertainment, music and additional suppliers.

- Transportation and guest logistics.

- The number of celebrations planned across the wedding weekend.

It is also important to remember that the venue and accommodation costs are only part of the overall wedding budget. Creating a celebration at Villa Cimbrone involves considering the wider guest experience, from welcome events and dining to entertainment and the finer details of the wedding day itself.

My advice is to establish your approximate guest numbers and overall wedding investment before setting your heart on this as a venue. Villa Cimbrone is an extraordinary setting, but it is best suited to couples planning a substantial luxury celebration with the budget to match.

A detailed proposal based on your specific requirements is always the best starting point.

10. Why you need an experienced wedding planner WITH A TEAM ON THE GROUND

Planning a destination wedding at Villa Cimbrone involves much more than finding a beautiful venue and selecting your suppliers.

There are venue arrangements to coordinate, timings to consider, supplier logistics, guest transportation, design decisions and countless details that need to come together seamlessly.

Having an experienced planner who knows the venue and works regularly on the Amalfi Coast can make an enormous difference.

At Sophisticated Weddings Italy, we specialise exclusively in weddings in Sorrento and along the Amalfi Coast. We have worked at Villa Cimbrone on several occasions and understand the importance of creating a celebration that works beautifully within the setting.

For international couples in particular, having a team on the ground who understands both the local way of working and the expectations of an international wedding can make the entire experience much more straightforward.

11. Is Villa Cimbrone the right wedding venue for you?

Villa Cimbrone is an extraordinary choice for couples who love historic Italian architecture, beautiful gardens, panoramic sea views and timeless elegance.

It is particularly suited to couples looking for a refined destination wedding with a strong sense of place, rather than a conventional hotel ballroom or a purely beachside celebration.

However, it is important to look beyond the photographs and consider the practical arrangements, accommodation, guest numbers, accessibility and overall budget before making your decision.

When all these elements come together, Villa Cimbrone offers the opportunity to create a wedding that is genuinely special.
